CurriculumK-2 students engage in exploration with materials to develop creativity and innovative thinking. They learn proper procedures for safely using materials. Students talk about artwork, make observations, and analyze and compare works of art. They make connections between their artwork and their personal lives, Studio centers include drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, building, and printmaking.

I grade projects using the following rubric.
Artistic Behaviors Creating Thinking about my work, problem solving, trying something new, understanding key ideas, 3 = I tried something new. I remembered what I’ve learned and made connections. I followed directions. Every part of my art is meant to be there. 2 = I made something that was not hard for me. I didn’t try something new. I do not really understand the idea we learned about or I did not follow directions. 1 = I did not try a new way to make art and there are no connections to what I’ve learned. My project does not include the idea we learned about at all or is incomplete. Craftsmanship and Effort Appropriate, neat, and creative use of materials; artwork shows pride, patience, care, and effort. 3 = My artwork was carefully and patiently created. I worked as hard as I could and did my very best. 2 = I could have completed my project with more care and patience. I didn’t try my best. 1 = My project is incomplete, inappropriate, or sloppy. Social Emotional Learning Safe and responsible use of materials; respect for classmates, teacher, materials, and self 3 = I followed the rules of the art room. I was careful and safe with the materials. I was respectful of my classmates, my teacher, the materials, and myself. 2 = I received 1 break for not following the rules of the art room. I wasn’t careful or safe with materials. I was not respectful of my classmates, teacher, the materials, and/or myself. 1 = I received 2 or more breaks for not following the rules of the art room. I broke materials or made unsafe choices. My behavior made it hard for me to do my work. |
